StitchMatch is a free yarn substitution tool designed to help knitters and crocheters find perfect substitutes for discontinued or unavailable yarns. We match based on physical parameters: gauge (stitches per 4 inches), weight category (CYC 0-7), and fiber content.

Our Data Sources

• Brand TDS Sheets — Technical Data Sheets from Lion Brand, Red Heart, Bernat, etc.
• Craft Yarn Council — Standard weight categories (CYC 0-7).
• Ravelry Database — Community-contributed gauge data.

Why Gauge Matters

Gauge (stitches per 4 inches) is the most critical parameter for yarn substitution. Two yarns may have the same weight category but different gauge — leading to size differences. StitchMatch prioritizes gauge match over brand or fiber.
